Due to the increasing standards for cable management compatibility in computer cases, the rails are actually designed for the HDD connectors to be facing the rear (right side panel) so the cables will remain hidden for a cleaner look. If you refer to the pictures below, you can see how the drive rails are meant to be attached for the drive to mount properly.
